COVID-19 has claimed the death of a Georgia police officer, who posted anti-vaxx messages to Facebook and used an anti-parasitic medication instead of a vaccine.
According to local news station WSAV, Captain Joe Manning (57) of Wayne County Sheriff's Office, died Wednesday following a brief battle with the virus.
Sheriff Chuck Moseley stated, "Captain Manning is an integral part our family and our hearts break." According to WSAV, "Our love and prayers go forward for his family."
Manning's Facebook posts circulated after his death was announced.
Manning shared an image in one post that stated, "I am not vaccinated because of my choice and that's mine right."
Manning also encouraged people to buy ivermectin (an anti-parasitic medication used frequently to deworm horses) in another post. This drug is increasingly being used by people as a misguided attempt at COVID-19 treatment or prevention.
Manning posted on Facebook, "OK Folks Wayne Feed and Seed Ivermectin has some liquid and Ivermectin get them while supplies last."
Manning also posted on Facebook that he had taken Ivermectin by himself and criticised Facebook for disciplining his for spreading misinformation, The Independent reported.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have stated that the drug doesn't prevent or treat coronavirus and issued this week a health advisory highlighting an increase in severe illnesses caused by ivermectin.
The number of calls to poison control centers in the United States about ivermectin exposures has increased fivefold since the pre-pandemic baseline. A CDC report stated that there was a particularly sharp increase in July 2021.
People were asked by the Food and Drug Administration to stop using the drug. You are not a cow. Seriously. Stop it!"
