Arsenal fell to 10 men after Xhaka was sent off for a tackle against Joao Cancelo
Manchester City dominated the Premier League, and Arsenal's ten-man team were beaten to death.
The Gunners lost their first three league games for the first time since 1954. This match was effectively over at half-time.
City captain Ilkay Gundogan scored and Ferran Torres, the striker, scored within 12 minutes. Arsenal's hope of a miraculous comeback was dashed when Granit Xhaka, a midfielder, was sent off after he lunged at Joao Cancelo.
After Jack Grealish's trademark teasing, Gabriel Jesus was able to score a third from 100m. Rodri then guided Gabriel Jesus home from 20 yards.
Pep Guardiola, City manager, had already used all three substitutes within just 16 minutes of the start of the second period. The hosts were unable to keep the ball down and ended the game with Torres' second goal six minutes later.
Guardiola's former assistant Mikel Arteta, looked as if he was in shock in the technical area. Raheem Sterling twice lost his chance to win. Riyad Mahrez and Aymeric Laporte missed opportunities to extend the margin of victory.
Arsenal managed to score one shot off target and had 19% possession by the end. They have yet to score in this season's Premier League and will play Norwich immediately after the international break, the team that they replaced at the bottom of the table.
No Kane, no Ronaldo, no problem
Guardiola, despite Arsenal's thrashing: "We can do better"
Guardiola is now going to attack the new season with no orthodox number nine after they were forced to give up their hopes of securing Harry Kane from Tottenham.
His side will continue to be as open-minded as Arsenal as it meets its opponents, so there won't be any problem.
The Gunners defense was so weak, it barely did justice to their Premier League status.
City's opening match was pleasing on the eyes. As he made his way through the visitors' midfield, there was no challenge for Bernardo Silva. There was also no closing down of Jesus as Jesus lined up his cross. Gundogan, who is not the greatest physical threat, barely faced any challenge as he rose at goal. It was a perfect example of everything wrong with the visitors.
Ederson stood still for 10 seconds as he aimed his clearance. Emile Smith-Rowe eventually shut down the Brazilian and forced him into action.
Maybe he was bored. Smith-Rowe had waited so long to make his intended pass from his goal-line, that Smith-Rowe nearly missed the ball. He could only watch as the ball ricocheted off of him and narrowly missed the far post. Arsenal was not even close to scoring that goal.
Guardiola stated in his program notes that this was going to be a tough game for his team. It was City's third consecutive 5-0 home win over the Gunners by the end.
Xhaka's red-card folly
Arteta: City results 'tough to take'
Arsenal's performance dispelled any rumor that Arteta's underfiring team might be evicted by a 6-0 Carabao Cup victory over a West Brom youth team in midweek.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the skipper, and Martin Odegaard, the new signing made no difference to their previous mediocre performances against Brentford or Chelsea.
Xhaka was a perfect example of the Gunners' hapless state.
Xhaka, an experienced international, was needed to lead the youngsters around. His response to his team losing two goals so early in a crucial game was to launch himself at Cancelo, a move that made Martin Atkinson's decision of giving him a red card automatic.
Arteta showed some sympathy for the Swiss as he went down the tunnel, and spoke to the fourth official in a way that suggested he disagreed with the decision.
Arteta may be able to offer a different view when he examines the incident, but Arteta has much more to criticize.
Next up, Manchester City will be at Leicester on Saturday 11 September (15:00 BST). Arsenal will entertain Norwich (15:00) on the same day.
