Sam Oji, a former Birmingham City defender, has died at 35.

Oji began his career with Arsenal as a youth player in 2000. He joined the Blues in 2004 to pursue first-team football.

He played for Bristol Rovers, Doncaster Rovers and Leyton Orient. In July, he was appointed assistant manager at Highgate United.

The club confirmed the news via Twitter. Oji was described as "our beloved captain and leader, legend"

They added that Highgate United FC's thoughts were with Sam's family, including his children and grandchildren at this difficult time.

Highgate issued a statement on Friday stating that Oji was "extremely sick" but "still fighting like the soldier that he is".

Oji spent time in Ireland, Limerick, and Galway before moving to Highgate United in 2018.
