TikTok bans viral ‘milk crate challenge’ over safety concerns – TechCrunch

TikTok has removed the milk crate challenge on its platform. This was due to fears that people could get seriously hurt. TikTok users created a pyramid out of milk crates and attempted to climb over the unstable structure.
TechCrunch was informed by a spokesperson for the company that TikTok does not allow content that glorifies or promotes dangerous acts. We remove videos from our site and redirect users to our Community Guidelines in order to discourage such content. Everyone is encouraged to be cautious online and offline.

TikTok users can be seen falling to the ground while trying to climb up and down one side of the pyramid. After several healthcare professionals raised concerns about the trend, and the dangers it presents to participants, the ban was implemented.

The app now displays a notice that no results were found when you search for the hashtag trends. This page informs users that the phrase could be associated with content or behavior that is not in line with our guidelines. TikToks number one priority is to promote a safe and positive experience.

Many dangerous challenges have gone viral on TikTok since its popularity. TikTok users created a throw it in to the air trend in 2019, where they gathered in a circle and recorded them throwing an object up in the air. To see who it hit, the phone was placed on the ground. A popular skull-breaker trend went viral last year and led to criminal charges being filed against the teens who were hospitalized due to the challenge. This trend involved tricking someone to fall on their heads.

TikTok has taken action to stop its users from falling for dangerous trends such as the recent challenge to the milk crate.
