Lilly Wachowski Has a Great Reason for Not Directing Matrix: Resurrections

The obvious conclusion was that Lana and Lilly Wachowski, sisters and co-directors of the Matrix movies, would be returning to the franchise. It was therefore quite surprising to discover that Lana would be the sole director for The Matrix. Lilly Wachowski now explains why she left Trinity, Neo and the other directors.

It is very simple: She didn't want to.

She said that the idea of being backwards in my life and being part of something I'd done before was unappealing. It was like, after going through my transition, which involved a lot of upheaval in life and the loss of my parents, I didn't want to return to the same thing I had done previously. I felt unfulfilled and it was actually the opposite. It was like I was going back to live in the same old shoes. It was not what I wanted to do.

Lilly Wachowski has made three Matrix films; it is very unlikely that she would be interested in making another. She also notes that her awareness of being transgender was only made public in March 2016, and has changed a lot since then. It is understandable that she wants to move on from the past and leave it behind. She was also careful to speak for her sister and her decision to return to The Matrix. Lana had other reasons for making Resurrections. That's okay!

Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss were also stars in The Matrix: Resurrections. The film will premiere on HBO Max and theaters on December 22. You can read our recap to learn more about the first footage in the film.
