Manchester United is in advanced negotiations to sign Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal's captain from Juventus.

BBC Sport has learned that the 36-year old will not be moving to Manchester City.

Massimiliano Allegri, the boss of Juventus, confirmed that Ronaldo said he no longer had any intention to play for the Italian giants.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, United boss, said that Ronaldo "knows we are here" during Friday's press conference.

Ronaldo, who was signed from Sporting Lisbon to Manchester United for 12.2 million in 2003, scored 118 goals in 292 matches for the club.

"He knows we are here" - Solskjaer, Ronaldo

Solskjaer stated that he was shocked by the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's desire to end his time in Italy during Friday's press conference, just before the news about United's approach broke.

He said that Ronaldo was spoken to by Bruno Fernandes (United midfielder), his Portugal team-mate.

Solskjaer stated that he didn't believe Cristiano would leave Juventus. It's speculation this morning, speculation over the last few days, it's all.

"I also know that Bruno has been talking with me. He knows our feelings about him, and if he ever wanted to leave Juventus, he knew that we were here."

Manchester City was once considered one of the favorites to sign the ex-player for Real Madrid, but reports suggest that they had already reached an agreement on terms and conditions.

Pep Guardiola, City manager, stated that Cristiano is a Juventus player. I can't add anything.

"In the three to four days that remain before the transfer window closes, anything could happen, but I believe there are very few players - Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are two - who decide where they will play.

"Right now I feel more than happy with the squad and we will continue to be the same."

Juventus informed Ronaldo on Wednesday that they would sell Ronaldo during the transfer window, but only if interested clubs agreed to their terms.

Allegri stated that Ronaldo made his contribution and was available to help, but now he is gone and life continues." Allegri spoke on Friday.

"Things can change. It's a law in life. Juventus is still the most important thing.

"He deserves to be thanked and encouraged for his efforts, as well as being an example to the young people. We must keep going, as I said."

According to reports Ronaldo told his Juventus colleagues that he would be leaving this month, having spent two years as the 36-time Serie A champions.

Then he drove to the training grounds on Friday morning, but he left before completing the session.

Allegri stated that Ronaldo "never expressed a desire" to leave Juventus a week ago and that the player had informed him that he would be staying at the Allianz Stadium.

In a lengthy Instagram post, Ronaldo called media speculation about the future of his career "a disrespect for myself as a man" and "a disrespect for my position as a player" a few days before.
