McIlroy aims to win the season-ending Tour Championship at Atlanta next week
Rory McIlroy, from Northern Ireland, claimed a share in the BMW Championship lead with Jon Rahm, the world number one and Sam Burns, after the first round in Baltimore.
In the second round of the FedEx Cup playoffs, the trio posted eight-under 64s at Caves Valley Golf Club.
McIlroy is currently 28th in the standings. The top 30 qualified for next week's season ending Tour Championship.
Spaniard Sergio Garcia is just one shot behind the pace in fourth.
McIlroy, a four-time major winner, hit four birdies on nine and an eagle 16th to record his lowest round score since 2020's Tour Championship.
He said, "I've been through playoff stretches before where it's always been in that lead group."
You can be one, two, or three in the FedEx Cup. That can take its toll on your mental health. I am in a situation where I must play well to be able to play next week.
"There's an element of free-wheeling."
Dustin Johnson, the FedEx Cup champion, is tied for seventh place with 12 other players. Paul Casey from England bogeyed the 18th spot to finish the day at four under.
Both Shane Lowry from Ireland and Lee Westwood from England are at the same under.
