Fifa, the world's governing body of football, says it is currently "negotiating the complex evacuation of Afghan footballers."

After fearful statements from sportswomen about their safety under Taliban rule, the Australian government evacuated 50 female athletes.

Many of the country's female players have fled to hiding.

Fifa stated that it was working with "governments" and other relevant organizations.

On Thursday, at least 60 people were killed and 140 more were injured in two explosions at Kabul's airport.

Fifa had written to several governments in August to ask for the evacuation of female players.

The Taliban had previously ruled from 1996 to 2001 and prevented girls from getting any education. Women were not allowed to leave their home without being accompanied or working with a male relative.

They were often punished and beat for those who resisted them.

The governing body stated that "Fifa's leadership was personally involved in negotiating complex evacuations of footballers and other athletes."

"This is a very challenging environment. Please understand that we can't provide any additional details due to the volatile and delicate situation on the ground.
