Benjamin Mendy, a Manchester City footballer, has been charged with rape. Police have confirmed that the Premier League champions suspended the defender.
After being charged with four counts each of rape, and one count of assault sexually directed at three persons, the France international will appear in court Friday.
Cheshire Police issued a statement on Thursday saying: "The Crown Prosecution Service, (CPS), has authorized Cheshire Constabulary [to] charge a man with sexual assault allegations.
"Benjamin Mendy (aged 27) has been charged with four counts each of rape, and one count of assault sexually. These charges are against three people aged 16 or older and were alleged to have occurred between October 2020 to August 2021.
"Mendy was remanded to police custody and will appear at Chester Magistrates Court on Friday, August. 27
Mendy, who came to City from Monaco in 2017, has played 75 games for the club. He was not used for Saturday's 5-0 victory over Norwich City after the defeat to Tottenham, which was a 1-0 loss.
The club released a statement on Thursday saying that Benjamin Mendy had been charged by police and was suspended while an investigation is conducted.
"The club cannot comment further on the matter until it is resolved."
