Andy Murray, a former champion, will take on Stefanos Tsitsipas, third seed from Greece in the first round at the US Open.

Novak Djokovic is the top seed and bidding for a record 21st Grand Slam men’s singles title. He also wants to sweep all majors in 2021.

Vera Zvonareva is Ashleigh Barty's number one female world ranking, and Johanna Konta, Britain's highest-ranked woman, plays Kristina Malinovic.

On Monday, the final Grand Slam of this season begins in New York.

Naomi Osaka is the defending women's champion and is bidding to win a third title after four years. She is seeded third, having been drawn in the opposite halves of Australia's Barty.

The Japanese player starts her defense of her title against Marie Bouzkova from the Czech Republic.

Naomi Osaka won 2020 US Open, which was held behind closed doors. She fought back to beat Victoria Azarenka at the women's final.

Cameron Norrie of Britain, seeded 26th in the tournament, will face highly-rated Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz. Dan Evans, the top-ranked male player in the country, will take on Thiago Monteiro.

Heather Watson, the only British player to gain direct entry into the main draw, plays Kaja Juvan in Slovenia.

American pair Sloane Stephens & Madison Keys will meet again in their 2017 women's doubles final, which Stephens won. Meanwhile, Nick Kyrgios of Australia meets Roberto Bautista Agut from Spain in an eye-catching opening match.

Federer, Nadal, Williams - what are the stars?

The tournament, which will be the first major since the coronavirus epidemic to attract a full crowd throughout, won't feature any star players.

American tennis great Serena Williams, turning 40 in the next month, was forced to withdraw from her home major Wednesday due to a hamstring injury. She had been forced to retire from her first round match at Wimbledon.

The 41-year-old sister of the six-time champion, Venus Williams, withdrew from the match due to a long-standing injury to her leg.

Roger Federer, a five-time Swiss champion, is now out after knee surgery. Rafael Nadal (35), has been forced to end his season due to a foot injury.

Dominic Thiem, the reigning men's champion from Austria, will be out of this year's tournament and the remainder of the 2021 season with a wrist injury.

Murray faces difficult test against Tsitsipas

Murray (left) has never met Tsitsipas in a match.

After he recovered from a minor thigh injury that forced him to withdraw from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games singles, Murray, 34, is one the few older stars to be playing in New York.

Tsitsipas, 23, is almost as difficult as possible to draw as he seeks to challenge his body in the best of five format.

Murray reached the third round at Wimbledon in July but decided to weigh himself after a promising run that was ended by Canada's Denis Shapovalov.

Murray has been playing in doubles at the Tokyo Olympics since then before traveling to the United States for preparation for the last major of the year.

After beating Richard Gasquet of France, the Scot was able to defeat Hubert Hurkacz, Poland's number 13, in straight sets in the Cincinnati Masters 2nd round.

Murray won against Noah Rubin, a qualifier at the Winston-Salem Open, before being defeated by Frances Tiafoe, an American.

He now turns his attention towards Tsitsipas. Tsitsipas reached his first Grand Slam final this year at the French Open but has never advanced past the third round of New York.
