World Cup qualifiers: Bamford gets first England call-up as Alexander-Arnold returns

Last update on. From the section England
Patrick Bamford has scored 18 goals over 67 Premier League games.

Patrick Bamford, a Leeds United striker, has been called up for England's 2022 World Cup qualifying matches.

After missing Euro 2020 with an injury to his thigh, Trent-Alexander Arnold (right-back) has been recalled to the squad. Jesse Lingard was also recalled.

The 25-man squad does not include Mason Greenwood, Manchester United forward and Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell.

Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford both missed out due to injury, while Arsenal's Ben White has Covid.

Gareth Southgate's team plays three matches in seven days, their first match since the Euro 2020 final loss to Italy.

England will play in Hungary on September 2nd, and host Andorra September 5th. Then it will travel to Poland on September 8th.

Because of Covid-19 restrictions, there will not be any England fans at the away games.

Bamford was "very close" to the Euros squad

After impressing in the Premier League promotion last summer, Bamford is now the only uncapped player to be included in the England squad.

Southgate stated that the 27-year old has the opportunity to offer options after injuries sustained to his Euro 2020 squad.

"It's a new cycle and we would always choose the bulk of our squad from the summer. Southgate said that only two games are left in the season, so there were no plans to make major changes.

"Phil Foden, Marcus Rashford were both injured, so there was an opportunity for the forward areas. We were happy with Ollie [Watkins'] work and now Patrick has the opportunity to be number nine.

"His progress has been great with Leeds, he was very close at last season's end.

"We worked with him under-21 so we are familiar with him and it is a special time for his family."

Southgate: Players are ready to leave Euros

Southgate says Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, three of the players who were penalized in the final, want to "move forward".

After the defeat, all three players were targeted via social media.

Southgate stated that he was in contact with all three in the days following the final. Their clubs were also in touch.

They know they can get support, but they also want to be able to move on. It's a new season, with new challenges. These are young, exciting players who have a lot of exciting times ahead.

Analysis - Bamford is a 'powerful and mobile addition to Gareth Southgate’s squad'

Phil McNulty, BBC Sport chief football writer

Patrick Bamford's first England call up for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers was a well-deserved reward for a striker who had been a nomadic until his undoubted promise, and talent flourished fully in the hands of Marcelo Bielsa, Leeds United manager.

The 27-year old was an integral part of Leeds' promotion into the Premier League. He was also the leader as the team finished ninth in the Premier League's first season.

After moving to Chelsea from Nottingham Forest and having loan spells at six clubs, Bamford was unable to find stability. He had previously been at Middlesbrough for a temporary spell before moving on to Leeds.

He will be a strong, mobile addition to Gareth Southgate’s England squad. His style fits perfectly with the intensity Bielsa expects from his team. Southgate now hopes to be the beneficiary.

Southgate's other strikers are England's captain Harry Kane, and Everton's Dominic Calvert Lewin. The manager is delighted that his main marksman has finally reached an agreement with Spurs and he has decided not to move to Manchester City.

Southgate hopes Kane will put the summer of uncertainty behind him and lead England's bid to qualify for Qatar in 2017.
