State Department warns US citizens to leave gates of Kabul airport 'immediately' due to threats

The State Department advised Americans at the Kabul airport gates to evacuate "immediately" because of threats.
According to a U.S. Embassy security alert, Wednesday's security alert stated that "Because there are security threats outside of the gates of Kabul Airport", U.S. citizens should avoid travel to the airport and avoid airport gates at the time unless they receive specific instructions from a U.S. representative to do so." U.S. citizens currently at the Abbey Gate East Gate or North Gate should evacuate immediately.

Although specific details regarding the threats were not provided in the bulletin there are growing concerns about security at Kabul’s Hamid Karzai international Airport. Evacuations continue less than one week before the deadline of Aug. 31 for U.S. forces to withdraw from Afghanistan after a Taliban takeover.

"Every day that we're on ground is another day that we know ISIS-K seeks to attack the airport and both U.S. forces and allied forces as well as innocent civilians," President Joe Biden stated.

The United Kingdom's Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office sent a similar urgent message regarding the threat of terrorist attacks at the airport.

"The security situation is unstable in Afghanistan. Terrorist attacks are a constant threat. Avoid Kabul Hamid Karzai International Airport. "Remove from the vicinity of the airport if you find yourself in danger and wait for further guidance," the updated guidance provided by the office on Wednesday.

Officials from the Biden administration said Wednesday that the U.S. had evacuated 82,000 people aboard military and coalition flights departing Kabul's Hamid Karzai International Airport. This was one day after the Taliban overtook Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. At least 4,000 passport-carrying U.S. citizens and their families have been evacuated. However, Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated Wednesday that as many as 1,500 U.S. citizens may still be left.
