WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo was taken into custody Wednesday on charges of felony robbery following an alleged fight with a waitress about a bar tab.
According to Texas court records Charlo was arrested Wednesday for three counts of second-degree Robbery stemming out of an incident that occurred in July. Charlo was released after posting bond on all three charges.
According to records, Charlo was with others at a San Antonio bar the night before Charlo’s brother, Jermell fought Brian Castano in a fight for the junior middleweight title. The police affidavit states that Charlo didn't pay a "large bill" at a bar after his credit card declined three times.
Police were called to the bar by employees who claimed that Charlo had accused a waitress, claiming she lost her credit card. He demanded that she pay the bill instead. According to the affidavit, Charlo was seen on surveillance video going through two bill collection binders belonging to waitresses. These binders contained Charlo's identification and a cash payment from another customer. Police claimed that the binders had been returned empty after Charlo was seen going through them.
The surveillance video did not have audio. However, the affidavit says that Charlo shouted at the camera that he would "f--- all your s--- up." A robbery charge in Texas is considered a second-degree crime if it involves a threat to another person or places them in danger of bodily injury or death. This crime can be punished with a maximum of two to 20 years imprisonment and a $10,000 fine.
Charlo (32 lbs, 22 KOs), 31 is the top-ranked middleweight on ESPN. He just finished a title defense against Juan Macias Montiel.
