Third LV= Insurance Test. Emerald Headingley (day one) India 78: Anderson 3-3, Overton 3--14 England 120-0 Hameed 60* Burns 52* England lead with 42 runs Scorecard

England put on a spectacular all-round performance to win the third Test against India at Headingley.

The home team defeated India for only 78 runs, and then moved serenely to 120-0, an advantage of 42.

They were led by James Anderson, a peerless figure who claimed 3-6 including Virat Kohli as India captain, and England exploited the seam movement available.

Craig Overton was in the team to replace Mark Wood. Sam Curran and he also took three wickets.

India lost seven wickets in their last seven innings for 22 runs. At one point, they had four wickets to lose for no runs within six balls.

England's day was made even better by Haseeb Hameed's 60 runs, which were used to open Test cricket for the first-time since 2016.

England's opening partnership beat India's 52-game total, leaving them in an ideal position to even the series at 1-1.

Brilliant England reverses the momentum

England's performance was impressive and unexpected considering India's dominance in the first two Tests. This was especially evident when India lost at Lord's.

Australia lost on this field two years ago.

Joe Root's team now has the momentum reversed, their talisman all-rounder being just one of many absentees. This could be a great series.

Everything was perfect from the moment Kohli won and chose to bat. England had an opportunity to bowl in a way that only the most brave captain could have.

Overton's selection was justified over Saqib Mahamood. England's catch was greatly improved by England, and Hameed earned his promotion to replace the discarded Dom Sibley.

India were, however, terrible - their batting was loose, their bowling was untuned, and their fielding was poor.

We know from the past that even the most difficult odds can be overcome at Headingley. England won by being bowled out for just 67 in Stokes' Test. An India win from here would be a remarkable comeback.

Anderson is the England juggernaut

Root stated that he wasn't disappointed by losing the toss. Anderson had to make five deliveries in order to demonstrate why.

KL Rahul was seduced into a foolish drive, and soon thereafter, Cheteshwar Pujara poked at a beautiful outswinger. Anderson was the center of England's emotional celebrations after Kohli was seduced to play away with his body again.

England was able to hold their line and take advantage of the pitch's slight encouragement. Ollie Robinson had Rishabh Pan and Ajinkya Rahane on either side of lunch, to limit Jos Buttler's catch count to five. Rohit Sharma was left at the other end with just 18 balls from his 100 first balls.

Rohit's death was the catalyst for the carnage. Overton pulled back his length, and an awful pull was caught mid-on. Mohammed Shami, also shorter, fenced to the third slip from the next ball.

Ravindra Jadeja crossed Curran's leg to play the next over. Shami joined Jasprit Bumrah in recording a golden duck. This means that both tailenders responsible for England's Lord's demise were out of first ball.

India's lowest ever total against England was achieved when Mohammed Siraj led to Root's first slip to give Overton his threer wicket.

Hameed is the cherry on top of England's cake

England's poor run of results, which has seen them without a win in seven Tests, is largely due to their batting fragility.

Dawid Malan was recalled to bat at 3 and Hameed joined Burns to form England’s 18th different specialist opening couple in nine years.

England produced their third opening stand with 100 or more in 2016 after Burns and Hameed made the previously difficult surface seem docile.

Hameed combined solid front-foot defense with punchy cuts and wristy clips. His only mistake was an edge against Bumrah at 47. Rohit's slip at the second slip gave Hameed the boundary that allowed him to reach his first Test half-century in home soil.

Burns, a left-hander, swatted Siraj six times over square leg. He reached his half-century right before the end of the Headingley crowd's taunting India in the evening sunlight.

England had created the perfect platform to score a massive first-innings run. They will be hoping Malan can make it happen on Thursday, to add to their success with a raft of other changes.

They said, "A perfect day for England"

James Anderson, England bowler: "We had an awful week at Lord's but we were able to recover quickly. We arrived here hungry and ready for battle.

"We did that using the ball, the whole attack worked really well." The two men with the bat displayed so much skill, fight and fighting.

Michael Vaughan, former England captain: "It has been the perfect day." England has been extraordinary. The bowlers gave a spectacular performance. It was exactly what England needed.

"India batted horribly considering how much talent they have in their changing rooms." KL Rahul started the proceedings with a poor drive. Virat Kohli followed with a poor stroke. Rohit Sharma was left with a weak pull shot. Ravindra Jadeja missed a straight delivery.

Jonathan Agnew, BBC cricket correspondent: "England haven’t done anything wrong today. It is hard to imagine India having a worse day than this.
