Gianni Infantino, president of Fifa, has asked Boris Johnson, the UK Prime Minister, for exemptions to allow Premier League clubs to release players in red-list countries for World Cup qualifying.

Spain and England clubs say they won't release players to play in matches in red-list countries.

Infantino stated, "I suggested that an approach similar to those in the final stages of Euro 2020 should be implemented."

VIPs could be invited to Euro 2020 matches at a later stage without being isolated.

Infantino stated that it was a matter of "great urgency and importance".

He said, "We have all faced global problems together in our past and must continue doing so in the future."

"I call on every member association, each league and every club to show solidarity and do what is right and fair for the game."

"Many of world's best players compete in leagues in England or Spain. We believe that these countries share the responsibility for protecting and maintaining the integrity of sporting competitions around the globe."

The 10-day isolation period required upon return to the UK by the UK government would mean that players will miss several games.

Premier League stated that its clubs had "reluctantly, but unanimously", decided not to release any players. They also said that extensive talks had been held with the Football Association (and government) "to find a solution", but that no exemption had been granted.

The Premier League was also supported by the English Football League, and its players will not be allowed to travel to countries listed on the red list.

Fifa President says he has "appealed to the necessary support" for UK quarantine restrictions, so that "players can represent their countries in qualifying matches for Fifa World Cup. This is the ultimate honor for professional footballers."

He said: "Together, we have shown solidarity & unity in the fight against Covid-19. I urge everyone to secure the release of international players in time for the Fifa World Cup qualifiers.
