Serena Williams withdraws from US Open, citing hamstring recovery

Serena Williams announced Wednesday morning via social media that she is withdrawing from US Open.
Williams stated that she made this decision to allow her body to heal from a torn Achilles.

"New York is an exciting city and one of my favourite places to play. I will miss the fans, but will cheer everyone on from far."

Williams, 39, was defeated on Centre Court and retired from her first round match at Wimbledon in June.

Williams retired from a match at majors for the second time in her career. In 1998, Williams was playing in the third round of the All England Club.
