China says the US and its allies must be held accountable for human rights violations in Afghanistan

According to Reuters, China stated that the US and its allies should be held responsible for violations of human rights in Afghanistan's war on terror.

China's UN Ambassador stated that these countries cause "great suffering" under the banner of democracy, human rights.

China has been building friendly relations with Taliban since the Islamist group's overthrow.

China's Ambassador to the United Nations stated that the US must be held accountable for human rights violations in Afghanistan by the American military, according to Reuters.

At a UN Human Rights Council emergency session, Chen Xu stated that the US, UK and Australia must be held responsible for violations of human rights in Afghanistan by their military. The council heard reports about violence and abuses by the Taliban who took Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, on August 15.

Chen didn't specify the alleged violations, but stated that the US and other nations caused "great suffering" by their military intervention in sovereign states "under the banners of democracy and human right," according to Reuters.

After the September 11 attacks, 2001, US-led forces invaded Afghanistan and established a military presence for 20 years. They then withdrew their support.

Amnesty International and others reported that thousands of Afghan civilians were killed in the conflict in Afghanistan. Civilian casualties were also suffered by all sides. According to the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University, approximately 700 Afghan civilians were killed in drone and air strikes by the US in 2019.

China is not the only country that has been accused of human rights violations. International scrutiny has focused on China's treatment of ethnic Uyghurs living in Xinjiang. The US also announced sanctions against several Chinese officials for "genocide."

China is blaming the US and its allies in the chaos created by the Taliban's takeover of Kabul. China was the first nation to recognize the Taliban rulers in Afghanistan and to engage with them. There has been speculation that Beijing is looking to acquire a $1 trillion mineral deposit.

Chen stated that he would continue to develop a friendly, good-neighborly and cooperative relationship with Afghanistan, as well as continue his constructive role in the country's reconstruction and peace process.
