Ashley Fletcher scored his first goal of the season.

Patrick Vieira still awaits his first win as Crystal Palace manager. Watford advanced to the third round of Carabao Cup thanks to a late goal scored by Ashley Fletcher.

Vieira's side won the match and Jean-Philippe Mateta had two chances saved by Ben Foster in the first half.

Foster denied Christian Benteke, while Cheikhou Kouyate, a midfielder, was denied.

Fletcher won the victory by stretching to bring home a Cucho Hernandez cross.

Vieira is still managing the Premier League's summer transfer, and may be searching for a new centre forward.

His team has had 22 attempts in Tuesday's cup match and the opening two Premier League matches, but only five of them have hit the mark.

Mateta tested Foster in his near post, before William Troost Ekong brilliantly directed Conor Gallagher to cross his bar under pressure from Mateta.

Watford had only one shot in the first period. However, Watford improved after the break. Troost-Ekong, Hernandez and Hernandez each had chances. Hernandez found space down the left swing and cut back. Fletcher joined the club as a free transfer this summer after leaving Middlesbrough.

Palace has been eliminated in round 2 for the third consecutive season.

Xisco Munoz, Watford manager, to BBC Three Counties Radio said: "It's a very good performance. I'm very happy for the players. We gave opportunities to many players tonight and they proved they could cope with the situation.

"I am pleased with the squad and can say "congrats tonight. You gave a great performance." It's important for both the squad and team, and it helps improve our mentality.

Patrick Vieira, Crystal Palace manager: "We need to change our mentality when in opposition. We need to be more aggressive and determined in order to seize those opportunities, because we did not today.

"There is a lot frustration on our part because I believe we made enough to win. It is disappointing because we need to do better. We must score goals if we are to win football matches. This is not the case.
