After groin surgery, Daniel Podence made his Wolves debut this season.

Wolves won their first season win when they defeated Nottingham Forest to reach round three of the Carabao Cup.

The visitors nearly took the lead when Daniel Podence crossed Rayan Ait Nouri's cross. But Ethan Horvath saved them.

Romain Saiss finally put Wolves ahead just before half-time, and Podence quickly doubled their lead.

Francisco Trincao's close-range finish in the final seconds and Morgan Gibbs White's 20-yard curler won the victory.

Both sides entered the tie with a losing record. Forest made 10 modifications to Stoke's side, while Wolves made seven.

Although they have lost to Tottenham and Leicester in the Premier League, they have played some excellent football this term without any reward.

Podence, who had been injured to begin, was a constant threat throughout the first half. He almost put his side ahead with a shot that was angled at an acute angle and missed the post.

Finally, they were rewarded when Saiss scored from Ki-Jana Hoever’s cross. They were then two up when Podence scored from Fabio Silva’s delivery.

Chris Hughton's team has now lost five of six games in all competitions, thanks to late goals by Trincao as well as Gibbs White.

Bruno Lage, the head coach of the Wolves, spoke to BBC WM 95.6

"It was an enjoyable game. We did what we wanted to do. It was the same game as against Tottenham: more ball, press higher and create opportunities.

"We are confident in the work we do and are pleased with the results. Daniel Podence began working with us around one week ago. I spoke to him about playing this morning and he said that it was like his preseason. He would play 45 minutes.

"I gave him more time which was good because he scored. We are extremely grateful for this competition."
