Andros Townsend snatched Andre Gomes' cross and booked Everton's spot in the Carabao Cup's third round

Andros Townsend's goal in Everton's first game gave the 10-man Toffees victory against Huddersfield in Carabao Cup.

Townsend, a summer signing, scored Andre Gomes' goal with 11 minutes remaining to secure their third-round spot.

Alex Iwobi's opening-half opener was cancelled by Tom Lees' header at the half-time whistle.

After clashing with Town's Sorba, Striker Moise Kaan was disallowed for a first-half effort and was sent off just before the hour.

Rafael Benitez made nine changes in the Everton team's draw with Leeds on Saturday. Jean-Philippe Gbamin, the Everton midfielder, got his first Toffees debut in 738 days after an injury.

Another Terriers player who was given the chance to impress, Kean flashed a short-range shot that went just wide, before Lee Nicholls, Terriers goalkeeper, made a smart save at his nearpost.

Everton took a well-deserved lead in 26 minutes. Iwobi scored smartly into the bottom corner following a Tom Davies driven run.

Kean believed he had doubled Toffees' advantage but was found to be offside after Niels Nkounkou passed.

Lees rose the highest from a Thomas corner, to head Huddersfield Level, before Matty Pearson's header against Fraizer Campbell was disallowed.

Kean was sent off in the 58th minutes for an incident with Terriers winger Thomas. It set up a tension-filled finale. But Benitez's team held firm and won courtesy Townsend's thundering finish.

Carlos Corberan, Huddersfield manager: "We wanted a good match tonight against a high quality opponent.

"With each passing minute we created opportunities. After making it 1-1, we remained calm and carried on doing great things. We were very grateful to the team for showing us that we have many options.

"We are confident in Danel Sinani's abilities. We knew that he had to be physically fit to support the team. He proved that he could help us even more.

Rafael Benitez, Everton manager: "We are fighting to protect our club. This is clear, and today's fans supported it. This is what I care about most.

"We created opportunities and took control. After scoring the goal, they believed more. They kept pushing for the goal, and then the sending off changed everything."

Moise Kean was red-carded. "He is still a young player, and must learn from it." You could see the fans' reaction to the action.
