After a foreign substance check, Caleb Smith, Diamondbacks pitcher, has his glove taken and is expelled from the game. (0:46).
PITTSBURGH -- Arizona Diamondbacks lefthander Caleb Smith was suspended for 10 games and given an undisclosed fine for having a foreign material on his glove last week.
Smith was suspended Tuesday as Major League Baseball cracked down on pitchers who use sticky substances to grip the ball better.
He decided to appeal his suspension which was to have been in effect when the Diamondbacks played at Pittsburgh Tuesday night.
Smith was taken from the field last Wednesday in the eighth against Philadelphia and had his glove confiscated. He was then ejected. The suspension will result in Smith's spot being taken off the Diamondbacks' 26-man roster.
Since the crackdown began on June 21, all pitchers have been inspected by umpires in games for illegal grip aids.
Smith, 30, is currently in his fifth major league season with his third team. After being traded to Miami last year, Smith is now 4-8 with a 5.20 ERA. This season marks his second season with Arizona. He pitched also for the New York Yankees.
After an appeal, Seattle's Hector Santiago saw his 10-game suspension lifted last month.
