FOXBOROUGH (Mass.) Coach Bill Belichick recognized that Cam Newton's absence at the New England Patriots facility because of a COVID-19 protocol "misunderstanding", has opened up a huge opportunity for Mac Jones, first-round pick.

Belichick referred mostly to the Patriots' statement regarding Newton's absence Tuesday morning, prior to their second consecutive practice without Newton. Jones said that this was a huge opportunity.

Jones did the most repetitions Monday in practice since opening of training camp, and that continued Tuesday.

Belichick has always said Newton is the starting quarterback. However, like all players, he will need to reestablish his position throughout the preseason. Belichick said that there may be a change in any position if someone performs well than the starter, or if the starter isn’t available.

When asked Tuesday morning if Newton's absence had changed his opinion on the situation for the quarterback, he replied, "We'll assess everything, as we always do, based upon the information we have."

Belichick stated that Newton will be back in practice for the Thursday session. Belichick did not specify whether Newton would be playing in Sunday's preseason finale.

Belichick stated, in general, that "everyone on our team has chances every day, throughout the week, against Giants, and in the match." I hope that we all can take advantage of these opportunities.

Belichick deflected most questions about Newton's absence Tuesday.

"I don’t have anything to add. It's what it is. He said, "We've given the information to you and that's all I know."
