Some members of the New England Patriots aren't happy with Cam Newton's absence.
According to Michael Giardi of NFL Network, there is "an internal level of frustration" among the Patriots about their star quarterback.
Giardi's report is one day after Newton was announced by the team as being absent until Thursday. This was due to confusion about COVID-19 testing protocols that were performed outside of team facilities.
Giardi says Newton's "open" situation has "opened" a window for Mac Jones to be New England's starting quarterback in Week 1.
Although Bill Belichick, the head coach, has been reluctant to discuss where the race for quarterback between Jones and Newton is at the moment during the preseason season, he did speak up on Tuesday.
Belichick stated to reporters, "We evaluate everything the same way we always do: based upon the information we have."
When Jones was asked by the Patriots coach if it was a huge opportunity, Jones replied "Yes."
According to the Patriots, Newton was subject to daily COVID-19 testing following his approval to leave New England to attend a medical appointment. However, due to misunderstandings about the NFL's protocols, Newton must go through the "five day entry process" before being allowed to return to the team.
Both players did well in Thursday's 35-0 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Newton was 8-of-9 for the 103 yard and one touchdown on three drives in the first quarter.
Jones was 13-of-19 and rushed for 146 yards on four drives that took place between the second quarters.
Josh McDaniels, offensive coordinator, told reporters Monday that Newton is "certainly the starter now", but that it was possible that one of the other two could fill the role when regular season begins.
McDaniels stated, "But, I know that those guys are really competitive and were giving them an chance to compete and play lots of football."
Newton has played in each of New England's preseason games. He is now 12-of-16 and has 152 yards of running and a touchdown. Jones is the No. Jones, the No. 15 pick this season is 26-of 38 for 233 yards in his two first appearances.
Sunday will be the final day of their preseason schedule for the Patriots. They will host the New York Giants. In Week 1, the Patriots will host the Miami Dolphins at Gillette Stadium on Sept. 12.
