Northern Ireland: Jonny Evans in squad as Kyle Lafferty and Liam Boyce left out

Evans is still not fully recovered from the foot injury that he sustained in May's FA Cup final
Jonny Evans was included in the Northern Ireland team for their World Cup qualifiers against Lithuania, Switzerland, despite having an injury.

Since injuring his right foot in May's FA Cup final, the Leicester City defender hasn't played.

Kyle Lafferty, an experienced striker, has been dropped. Liam Boyce was not considered due to family reasons.

Conor Bradley, a Liverpool teenager, is included. Ethan Galbraith, a Doncaster loanee is not allowed.

Corry Evans, Sunderland's skipper, is expected to be fit for the trip in Lithuania on September 2nd, despite missing two matches due to injury.

His brother Jonny has won 91 caps and was expelled during Leicester's FA Cup final victory. He has not played in any of the Foxes Premier League fixtures.

Northern Ireland will face Lithuania in a Group C qualifier, on 2 September. Then, it will host Switzerland on 8 September. Between those two games, there will be a friendly against Estonia on 5 September.

Ian Baraclough, manager of Evans acknowledged that Evans' selection doesn't guarantee his fitness and stated that he remains a doubt for all three fixtures.

"I have named him more to try and be sincere. Baraclough stated that although he hasn't started training with Leceister, it would be great to have him around over any time period.

"We know that he is a big question, so I have named him in the squad. However, there is a contingency strategy in case he does not make it. I wanted him to have every chance. I have had many conversations with him, Brendan [Rodgers] and Leicester manaer. They are ongoing and very positive.

"Nobody will put Jonny in danger of losing him for any longer than is necessary. It would be nice if he could get half an hour in the friendly against Estonia, but that is unlikely.

"Jonny's health and well-being is very important. We need to get him ready for the next matches." He is a major player for us, he's a big character, and great to be around.

Boyce is still welcome to apply

Boyce, Hearts' striker, has had a strong start to the season, thanks to his side's return in Scotland's top flight. He asked not to be included.

Boyce started his career in Cliftonville's Irish Premiership.

"I spoke with Liam over the summer, and he was unsure if it was right or wrong. Baraclough said that he didn't want him making rash decisions.

"He had a new addition to his family, and with all the pressures that it brings, he feels like spending more time with his family is something that is right at the moment so he didn’t want to be part of this squad.

"The door is still open for him and I'm glad he hasn’t called it quits and retired. He understands that players make big sacrifices when they leave, and it was best for him to not be involved right now.

"Sod's Law, he scores five goals and begins the season very well. It would be a great honor to have him as my choice.

Baraclough, who took over from Michael O'Neill last summer as NI manager, also chose not to pick Lafferty, 33 years old.

After Killie's relegation from Scotland Premiership, the former Burnley, Rangers, and Kilmarnock striker joined Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta.

Baraclough acknowledged that it was difficult for him to leave Lafferty out and was disappointed. However, he said that he hoped Lafferty would prove him wrong and win his place back in the squad.

Northern Ireland was third in their group, with European champions Italy, Switzerland and Switzerland undefeated. They won one point in a home draw against Bulgaria.
