Tony Finau won the play-off against Cameron Smith on The Northern Trust's final day to end his five-year wait to win a second PGA Tour championship.
After Smith's out-of-bounds tee shot, Smith made the American par on the first hole of play at Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey.
Finau, 31 years old, and Australia's Smith (28 years old) had completed the 72-hole regulation at 20 under par.
Storm Henri's heavy rain delayed Sunday's final round and made it impossible to go ahead.
Jon Rahm, the world number one, shared the 54-hole lead alongside Smith, a three-time PGA Tour winner. Smith shot an 11-under par course record 60 in round three. Finau was three shots behind Smith at the end of the final round.
The American won with an impressive back nine that included three birdies, an eagle, and a stretch of five holes.
Smith was able to pull within a stroke of Finau on the 17th, but he parred the last hole and returned to the 18th. Finau won the play-off with a par thanks to Smith's out-ofbounds drive.
Finau stated, "It took all I had because it was clear that I needed to reach 20 under."
"I was trying to find the best player in the game. He won't let go of a lead so I knew that I had to catch him. Cam was also playing well.
"I gave it all I had."
Finau has participated in 142 events, including 10 runner-up finishes since his victory in Puerto Rico five year ago.
"Nothing is given to you, and I was able earn this win. I hope the future is bright. He said that he is playing great golf.
After finishing outside the top 70 of the FedEx Cup standings, the English trio Ian Poulter and Matt Fitzpatrick, as well as Ireland's Seamus power, saw their season end.
The Northern Trust's top 70 finishers will now progress to the BMW Championship, Thursday's second FedEx Cup playoff event.
Reed is recovering from pneumonia in the hospital
After being diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia, Patrick Reed, the world's number 18, has admitted that he is currently in recovery at a hospital.
31-year-old 2018 Masters winner has not played since the WGC/FedEx St Jude Invitational earlier in the month. He also withdrew with an ankle injury.
"The good news about my ankle is that it is fine. "The bad news is that I have bilateral pneumonia." The nine-time PGA Tour winner said. He will also miss this year's BMW Championship.
"I am on the road to recovery. When I am cleared by the doctors, I look forward to my return. "I can't wait for the opportunity to go back out there."
Reed was ranked number 22 in FedEx Cup play-off standings, and ninth in Ryder Cup rankings when he entered Northern Trust.
Reed would have to miss the BMW Championship in order to be eligible for an automatic spot on the US Ryder Cup team. However, captain Steve Stricker might choose one of his six picks at the Texan.
