Facebook is adding Messenger's voice and video calls to main app

Do you remember when Facebook created Messenger in 2014? No one understood why. Facebook didn't know what it was trying for.
Bloomberg reports that Facebook now offers key Messenger features, including voice and video calling to the Facebook main application.

Chats and calls used to be part of Facebook Messenger, which was originally an integral part. To access these features, users needed to download Messenger in 2014 instead.

The feature is currently being tested in the U.S. as well as other markets. Connor Hayes is Messenger's director of product management. He explained to Bloomberg that the goal was to make it easier to switch between Messenger and Facebook apps.

These are just a few of the Messenger features Facebook will be bringing back to the main app. Bloomberg reports that Facebook began testing a limited version Messenger's inbox within its main app. In September 2020, the company began merging Messenger and Instagram's direct messaging.

Hayes claims that Facebook is now starting to view Messenger as a service rather than an app. Hayes said that Messenger features might be integrated into more Facebook products over time.

Facebook could also be looking for a way to tie all its products together in a more seamless manner. The Federal Trade Commission claimed that Facebook was a monopoly in a lawsuit filed December 2020. It demanded that the company be dismantled and Instagram and WhatsApp reestablished as independent companies. Although the complaint was dismissed in June 2021 it is possible that the FTC will make the same case in the future.
