Witches of Blackwood New Trailer: Australian Folk Horror Film

Folk horror fans who love the ancient traditions and magic of folk horror can attest that these stories often begin the same way. An outsider enters a community and is immediately made to feel uncomfortable. Australia's Witches of Blackwood is Cassandra Magrath's 2005 film Wolf Creek. This movie is essential backpacker horror, unless you are about to backpack. Cassandra plays a woman who finds her homecoming far more difficult than she expected.

The official synopsis is here, with the trailer below:

Claire Magrath, a young woman, is the film's protagonist. She returns home to find her hometown rife with witchcraft, and overshadowed at night by a mysterious darkness that is rife with rumo rs about a soul-stealing entity. A confrontation with a group of witches is her only hope for survival as she seeks to uncover the truth about her mother's death.

Although the trailer suggests Claire's father was involved in something sinister, it does not say that Claire's mother died. It is clear that her return home was not under good circumstances. However, there are more mysteries that she will discover. There are stories about a demon who lives in the woods and takes children (all of them), as well as a group of witches with glassy eyes that look like they haven't slept in months. There is no turning back once you find the truth. However, Claire will not be subject to a terrible fate as folk horror outsiders often do. We've all seen Midsommar, The Wicker Man.

The film Witches of Blackwood is directed by Kate Whitbread. It was written by Darren Markey. It will be available on digital and DVD September 7.
