According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurmans Power On newsletter, Apple plans to release a new Mac Mini model that will replace its Intel-based pro-focused model. The M1X Mac Mini, a high-end model, is expected to arrive in the coming months. It is believed to feature a new design and more ports than its predecessor.
Apple introduced a Mac Mini last year with its M1 processor. However, this model was meant to replace the entry-level Macs and had fewer ports that the 2018 Intel version. Although the M1 Mini's Thunderbolt ports are smaller, one can still be used to connect an external monitor. However, a second monitor can still work over HDMI.
The M1X nomenclature would indicate that the new model uses the same generation of CPU cores as M1 (and A14 Bionic chips used in iPhone 12), but has better performance due to having more CPU cores and GPU cores on a larger chip. This was Apple's design approach for the X processors in previous iPad models.
Although the current M1 Mac Mini is a fantastic computer, it has its limitations for professional use. There's also a feeling that its design, which is virtually unchanged from 2010, could be in need of a redesign. Gurman mentioned the possibility of a new Mac Mini previously, and now he seems more certain than ever that it will actually happen.
