Garth Crooks' team of the week: Raya, Alexander-Arnold, Henderson, Alli, Lukaku

Manchester City won their first season-opening win with a 5-0 victory over newly promoted Norwich. Liverpool was victorious over Burnley.
Brentford's promising start was continued by a draw at Crystal Palace, while Leeds & Everton played out an exciting 2-2 draw.

Brighton defeated Watford by 2-0 to keep their 100% record. Tottenham won 1-0 at Wolves, while Chelsea beat Arsenal by 2-0.

Manchester United lost 1-1 to Southampton while Aston Villa won 2-0 thanks to a Danny Ings win.

You can check out my team of week, and make your own selections at the end of the article.

Goalkeeper: David Raya (Brentford)

David Raya: It was obvious. Crystal Palace would have won their first season win if the ball had not left James McArthur’s right foot. Raya made a remarkable save to keep it goalless.

While there may have been three teams that won promotion, Brentford seems to be more likely to survive, at least based on current form. Even though I am not convinced.

The west London club is currently basking in euphoria. But that will not save them. They will need goals, and many of them. They have so far only played a poor Arsenal side and an average Palace team.

Did you know? Raya has kept a clean slate in eight of his ten league games for Brentford (excluding the play-offs).

Defenders: Trent Alexander - Arnold (Liverpool), Cesar Azilicueta, Shane Duffy and Reece James (Chelsea).

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Although the 18-year old's performance was impressive, it was not as good as Alexander-Arnold's against Burnley.

The Liverpool and England international wasn't content to just sling the ball around Anfield with incredible precision. He also produced an absolutely stunning ball for Sadio Mene to score Liverpool's second goal. It has been a while since I saw a fullback strike the ball with both his feet.

Did you know? Alexander-Arnold provided nine assists for Mane during the Premier League, four more than any other Liverpool player.

Cesar Azpilicueta - Chelsea are not Champions League champions by chance. They played well against Arsenal and reminded everyone that they are not going to give up the trophy.

You need to be a leader and captain capable of keeping players focused on the prize. Azpilicueta is such a man. As he was during the last season, the Spaniard was exceptional against the Gunners.

He will play better the more he takes on responsibility. Chelsea are undoubtedly the best team in the league, and their mentality is clear. They want to be the best.

Did you know? Azpilicueta completed 93% of his passes against Arsenal with three tackles and one block.

Shane Duffy: It was a surprise to see him leave Brighton to join Celtic on loan last year, and even more surprising to see him back. Duffy and Lewis Dunk reunite in a defense in which they have built a strong partnership over the years.

Brighton won their opening fixtures. They look like a side that is improving under Graham Potter. He has become an expert at saying very few things.

Did you know? Since the start of 2018-19, the Premier League's first season, only Dunk (both 10) and Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk (10 each) have scored more Premier League goals that Duffy (7).

Reece James said: It's a good thing that Chelsea's match at Arsenal was not a heavyweight boxing bout. The referee would have stopped the match if it was a heavyweight boxing contest. Arsenal won 2-0. It could have and should be five.

Arsenal were getting so much from Chelsea at one point, I thought they did a great job to get the win without feeling completely ashamed. James assisted Romelu Lukaku in scoring his goal, and he also scored the second.

It's impossible to imagine the Blues not challenging for the title after this performance. James is no longer a player for Chelsea or England.

Did you know? James is the second Chelsea player to score an assist and score away from home in the Premier League against Arsenal, following Juan Mata in September 2012.

Midfielders: Yves Bissouma (Brighton), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Dele Alli (Tottenham), Demarai Gray (Everton)

Yves Bissouma - I have been following him for a while now, and he just seems to get better with each passing of the ball. If he had been playing for a more popular side, I would have guessed he might have made my team on more occasions.

Watford and Brighton both played good football. Bissouma was undoubtedly the best player on the pitch. Bissouma, 24, is box to box and makes great interceptions. He can also see the pass.

He arrived in Brighton for an undisclosed amount, which usually means that he was paid buttons. I will eat my hat if he isn't worth more than 25m on the current market. Brighton would be wise to keep him.

Did you know? There were no Brighton players who had more interceptions (55) or tackles (55) against Watford than Bissouma.

Jordan Henderson: Has Liverpool lost its mind? They allowed Georginio Wisseldum to leave Anfield, and surely they don't want the same thing happening to Henderson.

The Liverpool captain was back in action against Burnley, dictating play in central park as Andre Previn did for the London Symphony Orchestra. Henderson was at his commanding finest.

Jurgen Klopp ranting about the game's past 10-15 years and calling for the Premier League to reconsider the rule changes in order to protect players, is that serious? Players safety and health are of paramount importance.

Below, you can read more about my opinion that the game is now a non-contact sport.

Did you know? Henderson completed (66), and attempted (73) more passes against Burnley than any Liverpool player.

Dele Alli: It was a game Spurs had to win. But they won it. The difference was quite simple between the two teams. Adama Traore cannot finish, while Alli can.

The Wolves winger is a master of all things. The Wolves winger has it all: a lightning fast pace, incredible power, and sometimes a little bit of skill. But, the hardest thing on a football pitch? To score the goal. Alli scored his first league goal in 17 month's time from the penalty spot. This takes courage and confidence.

This is the second consecutive week Alli has played for Spurs. It makes me wonder if Nuno Espirito Sante has achieved what Jose Mourinho did and found the player again. When you treat people well, it usually works.

Did you know? Alli's previous league goal in March 2020 was against Burnley.

Demarai Gray: Leeds received what they deserved in opening exchanges against Everton. Although I don't like VAR, referee Darren England used replay checks for the first goal in cases of doubt.

It is amazing that Liam Cooper was able to question his subsequent booking.

Everton is lucky to have Rafa Benitez as their manager, after the loss of Carlo Ancelotti. Gray, the Spaniard's winger, was electric against Leeds and is a true talent.

Did you know? Gray became the 34th player to score for Everton in Premier League, becoming the 34th.

Forwards: Gabriel Jesus (Man City), Romelu Lukaku (Chelsea)

Gabriel Jesus: Being against Manchester City after losing to Spurs is like being held captive by a tiger who hasn't had food in three days. This was the situation facing Norwich, who at the moment seem like they belong in a league that they don't deserve.

Everyone agreed that Gabriel Jesus was the man of match. I agree. But, I can't accept a coach playing a top-notch striker in a three-man attack giving assists, when he's perfectly capable of scoring goals.

Jesus should tell City that he knows what's best for him. He could either buy Harry Kane or let me play alongside him to forge a partnership. Or make me your main man. I'm gone.

Did you know? Only the second time Jesus has provided two assists in one Premier League match, he did it against Brighton in July 2020.

Romelu Lukaku has worked hard to achieve his success. Lukaku has played for West Brom and Everton as well as Manchester United, Inter Milan, and Inter Milan. He is now back in Chelsea, where it all began. Lukaku, a Belgia international, has received a lot of criticism.

At this point in his career, I see another Didier Drogba. Although I didn't think I would say that while he was playing for United the player's touch with his back towards goal is better and his overall football contribution is significantly improved.

Arsenal could not handle him but I would not worry too much if they were me. The Premier League's other teams will have to deal with Lukaku this season.

Did you know? Lukaku now has his 114th Premier League goal. He is now 20th most-scoring player in the competition, surpassing Ian Wright. Lukaku is also the eighth non-Englishman with 50+ goals in the competition.

The Crooks of the Matter

Jurgen Klopp, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seem to be upset about the rule changes that allow referees more flexibility in their decision-making. Officials are encouraged to continue playing on when there is physical contact between players, but it is not always a foul. Both managers feel that the game is at risk of becoming too physical.

It was a misspelling, I thought when I saw the comments. Is the game getting too physical? This game could become hilarious.

Regular readers will be familiar with how annoyed I was about players who would touch the ground. This was mostly due to the false assumption, that if contact was made in a first instance, then fouls had been committed.

However, this was not always the case. Football has been a contact sport since its inception. Although it's not something anyone wants, injuries are an occupational risk and often necessary. The contest will be sterile if players are not able to compete honestly and fairly.

Like any other elite sport, football must be competitive.
