Senator Ben Sasse stated that the US should maintain a "light footprint," with troops in Afghanistan, to counter terrorists and the reemergence Taliban rule.

During an interview with Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday, the Nebraska Republican stated that President Joe Biden should clarify that the United States could alter its position on withdrawal if Americans and their allies were threatened.

He also dismissed the idea that the US would have a small presence within the country, which he said was a problem.

He stated that "the false choice the President made for us over and over again for months has never been truthful." "The choice between withdrawing troops completely and giving the Taliban a safe haven to plot attacks of international reach, or having 150,000 occupying forces has never been one."

He said, "So that wasn't the choice, that's been false. We need an asset light footprint, forward deployment of special troops that can stop these kinds of terror attacks.

Sasse was reelected for a second term in the Senate last year. He has been a vocal critic of Biden’s withdrawal strategy. He called the Trump-Biden doctrines of weakness and the "trump-biden abandonment of Kabul shameful, Saigon-like" after the Taliban took over the country.

Sasse stated that Biden's actions created a dangerous situation for thousands of Americans in Afghanistan during the interview with Wallace.

He said, "They've placed us in a position where we have hostage situation developing." "I don’t think Americans fully understand the danger and peril that the president has placed us in, because one RPG [rocket propelled grenade], taking a plane onto that runway means that we’re stranded. The president must ensure that this hostage situation in which we are drifting is not tolerated by the Taliban.
