Aberdeen was awarded a point for Funso Ojo (right)'s near-post finish
Aberdeen and Hearts continued their unbeaten Scottish Premiership start and joined Hibernian on seven points at the top after a thrilling draw at Tynecastle.
After only one shot on target in the first half, Liam Boyce scored the 56-minute opener from the spot.
Aberdeen's Funso Ojo won the contest 15 minutes later.
This result sees the Dons leap to second in goal difference while Hearts climb to third.
The result extends Gorgie's winless streak to seven games, despite the visitors fighting back for a point.
Although the game was not controlled well, it was filled with effort and determination. The 17,000 strong crowd celebrated each crunching challenge as a goal.
The home crowd was almost silenced when Lewis Ferguson's first pass found Christian Ramirez inside the box.
Craig Gordon ran out and the Hearts goalkeeper was able make a crucial save to deny him.
Josh Ginnelly witnessed a deflected crossing crash into the near-post side neting.
Rivalry and tension were forgotten when Tynecastle raised its hand to honor Marius Zaliukas (ex-Hearts skipper), who died from motor neurone Disease at the age of 36.
Hearts should have had their opening shot at goal (and the opening goal) early in the second half when Gary Mackay-Steven, a former Dons winger, pounced upon Joe Lewis's failed catch but missed his finish wide.
He made it happen just minutes later, when Declan Gallagher's touch caused Mackay-Steven to trip Mackay-Steven. Boyce was then able to score the penalty.
Aberdeen responded quickly and scored the equalizer after substitute Dean Campbell grabbed a loose ball to the left.
Ojo made a low cross to the midfielder, and Ojo came in at the front of the net to score a point for both teams in the thrilling encounter.
Beni Baningime is the Man of the Match
Former Everton player (left) is a true find for Hearts. He restores calm in the midfield and rarely loses the ball.
What have we learned?
First, we discovered that maroon clashes with navy and red.
Due to a possible clash with Hearts' home kit, Aberdeen had to play last season's away jersey. Alternative options included the Dons playing in their away kit. That would have been a good idea.
Stephen Glass will be pleased to have received a reply from his team after being down a goal. Although the Aberdeen boss was worried about a third straight loss, Boyce opened the scoring. But his players fought for a precious point.
Tynecastle, for Hearts, will once again be a formidable place to travel to if they get the support of their fans.
They said what?
Robbie Neilson, Hearts manager: "To go up 1-0 and lose a goal is a bit disappointing."
"Aberdeen made a lot of pressure on us in the second half. Although we switched off to the goal, it was a great ball in."
Stephen Glass, Aberdeen manager: "It wasn't a normal game of football. There were two teams that wanted to win, and I believe we got what we deserved.
"We wanted a second. We seemed more likely to win. This is a great point. Many teams will be there and not get anything.
What's next?
Aberdeen turns their attention to Thursday's Europa Conference League (19:45 BST), as they attempt to overcome a one-goal deficit at Qarabag to secure a place on the group stage.
Next Saturday, Hearts will be back in action in the Scottish Premiership when they play Dundee United (15:00).
