Southampton 1-1 Man Utd: Mason Greenwood earns lacklustre visitors a point

Greenwood scored Manchester United's 19th Premier League goal

Manchester United's opening day demolition of Leeds United was a failure. Southampton won a well-deserved draw at St Mary's.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side appeared full of attack menace and threat in the 5-1 victory over Leeds. But here, they were only a shadow of that performance. Saints scored their first point of campaign and even threatened to win the title.

Southampton repelled United's bright start and took the lead after Che Adams' shot was deflected off Fred beyond goalkeeper David de Gea.

United appeared to be in the lead when Mason Greenwood's shot was missed by Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy 10 minutes later. Solskjaer moved to punish Saints even more, sending Jadon Sancho (73m) for the disappointing Anthony Martial.

Southampton, however, had the best chance to win all three points. De Gea was able to save Adam Armstrong's life when he appeared to be poised to score.

Solskjaer, United's boss, will be disappointed by the performance and the outcome. However, this was not more than Southampton deserved. They bounced back from Everton's defeat in their first match.

Man Utd fall well short

Manchester United opened brightly, and they had a threatening spell when they equalised. However, this was an average performance for a side with genuine Premier League title ambitions.

United became more sloppy with each game, with Paul Pogba's occasional flashes of brilliance failing to make up for his complete lack of inspiration.

Martial's contribution was minimal or non-existent, so it was not surprising that Sancho was appointed in his place. Sancho was calm as Southampton regained control and composure after Greenwood's leveller.

Nemanja Matic was slow and ponderous, while Fred was the main contributor to the shot that Adams took. It was too close for De Gea's reach when Saints won.

We don't know what happens behind the scenes, but these performances raise the question of what Donny Van de Beek must have in Solskjaer to not be considered for United's engine room.

Scott McTominay was on the bench until very late in the game, but the pattern of play was established when he returned.

Although it is early days, United was a great team that thrashed Leeds United. However, this was a poor display that they can't afford to repeat in upcoming seasons.

Saints prove their strength

After their 3-1 opening-day loss to Everton, Southampton's week was brightened by James Ward-Prowse signing a new five year contract. This was the most important player in Southampton's history.

The fact that they were awarded a point against the big-spending United was a richly deserved bonus. This will lift their spirits even more.

Saints were on the defensive during United's initial surge, but they held firm to win the lead. Then, when United pulled level and seemed to have all the momentum, they showed character and resilience to overcome the setback and push United all the way.

Armstrong, the 15m summer signing for Blackburn Rovers, will regret that he didn't take the big chance of taking all three points when he was played by Adams, De Gea diving low on his left to rescue United.

The goalkeeper had an opportunity to make amends in the corner, but couldn't force a header at far post.

Ralph Hasenhuttl of Southampton, who welcomed the final whistle with a fist pump salute, was very pleased with the result and performance. He also looks to have found a true gem in 18-year old right-back Valentino Livramento signed from Chelsea for 5m.

The youngster excelled in both the physical and offensive challenges of defence as well as in attacking threats. One storming run in the first half ended with a cross that was just inches from the incoming Armstrong.

Saints might feel that they should have all three points, but this game gave Hasenhuttl much to work with.
