Ohio State quarterback C.J. Coach Ryan Day announced Saturday that Stroud will be the Buckeyes' starter in the season opener against Minnesota on Sept. 2.

Stroud, who had been Justin Fields' backup last fall, was awarded the job ahead of Jack Miller (freshman) and Kyle McCord (junior). All three have never thrown a pass in college games, but Stroud, who is 6'3 and 218 lbs, completed 16 of 22 passes for an impressive 185 yards and two touchdowns. Day earlier this week stated that Stroud was starting to stand out in the competition.

Day stated at a news conference that Day would work hard on the weekend, and then start to prepare for Minnesota next week. After looking at the work that had been done between spring and preseason, Day stated that he was distinguished by his decision-making, leadership skills, and accuracy. We now need to get him ready to play in a game.

In 2020, Stroud was a true freshman and played three games against Michigan State, Clemson and Rutgers. He also ran 48 yards against the Spartans.

Day stated that, while all the quarterbacks have made improvements, it was still the right decision.

Day stated, "I believe he knows this is an opportunity." It's not an achievement -- it's an chance. He probably saw it that way. Now it's time to put it on the field.
