Aston Villa 2-0 Newcastle United: Magnificent Danny Ings' strike helps down Magpies

Last update on. From the section Premier League
Danny Ings's acrobatic efforts in the first-half of stoppage time were the first shots on target at Villa Park

Danny Ings's Aston Villa home debut saw him score a spectacular acrobatic volley as they won a well-deserved victory over Newcastle. This was a rebound from their first-day loss at Watford.

Ings, after linking perfectly with Tyrone Mings’ flick-on, sent an unstoppable bike kick into the corner of Freddie Woodman’s net in the last moment of a scrappy second half.

Villa started brighter in the second half. They doubled their lead with Anwar El Gazi's penalty. The penalty was awarded by referee David Coote, who received instructions from VAR to visit his pitchside monitor to examine a Jamaal Lascelles handball at Mings' header.

Newcastle was given a penalty by Coote for Emi Martinez's late challenge against Callum Wilson. However, VAR determined that Wilson had strayed from the plan and overturned the decision.

Wilson missed an excellent opportunity to score the visitors' first goal after five minutes. Wilson was wide open as Villa's players appealed against a foul by Wilson on Mings.

Newcastle lost its 13th league match in 2021. Only Burnley and Southampton have suffered more losses among the top-flight teams.

Magpies are hit with VAR interventions after Ings stunner

Both teams suffered high-scoring defeats in the first weekend of the campaign: Villa lost 3-2 at Watford and Newcastle lost 4-2 at West Ham. However, Villa Park was quiet until Ings' strike.

Wilson and El Ghazi had their chances early on, but the game quickly became disjointed with both teams giving up possession on a regular basis.

However, Ings' goal, scored with the game’s first shot on target, was well worth the wait.

The ex-St. Paul man was the first to Mings' flick on from Matty Cash’s long throw in, and he smashed a sweetly struck volley past Newcastle goalkeeper Woodman. This sent Villa Park's 42,000 fans into raptures.

Steve Bruce's team showed little interest in a recovery after El Ghazi doubled their lead. However, they were on the wrong side of a marginal offside decision that would have allowed Wilson to reduce his arrears if it went the Magpies way.

The Magpies are happy with their result after achieving a single target in the 90-minute period.
