Conor Gallagher joined Crystal Palace as a loanee from Chelsea
Brentford's Premier League season began unbeaten with a draw against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
Patrick Vieira's home debut game as head coach was a success for the Eagles, as Conor Gallagher scored the first goal.
Captain James McArthur saw then a curling effort at the box's edge from McArthur as the Eagles tried to make a breakthrough. David Raya tipped it away after the break.
Thomas Frank's Brentford won their first game by beating Arsenal. Bryan Mbeumo's free kick from wide cut the top of the crossbar.
Eagles lack cutting-edge costs
This game was more likely to reflect the early progress under Vieira for Palace than the defeat at European champions Chelsea last weekend.
This evidence shows that effort and dedication are not doubtful, but that the Eagles lack a killer instinct when it comes to goal.
Vieira wants to instill a new style of play. He called for Brentford's side to be "really courageous" with the ball. Vieira deployed an attacking-looking 4-3-2-3 formation, Christian Benteke being recalled as the central striker.
The crowd was enthusiastic in their support. Palace may have been buoyed by the boisterous welcome. They harried Brentford when they were in possession, and went close through Gallagher who put on an all-action show.
Their attacking threat diminished as the game progressed, and Brentford was able to regain some control.
It wasn't surprising that the home team had the best chance after the break. McArthur, captain in the absence of Luka Mivojevic, fired a superb effort that Raya tipped over.
Contrary to Palace's summer in transition, Brentford boss Frank has remained faithful with most of the players who were promoted from the Championship.
He chose an unchanged starting XI after last weekend's victory against Arsenal. However, they were little threat in the first stages. Ivan Toney was close with a quick shot from a distance.
After an uncertain start, the Bees quickly grew into the game, and the Bees ended the first half on top. Mbeumo's free kick hit the bar, and Frank Onyeka had a fizzing effort from the distance that Vicente Guaita saved.
Toney was their biggest threat in the second period, going close twice with headers from corners while they seldom looked like conceding at either end.
Four points and two clean sheets are a great start to their first top flight campaign in 74 years.
