Although the man in the photo has not been identified, he belongs to the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

To protect civilian and military evacuation flights, American soldiers are stationed at the capital's main airport.

Unidentified Marine, assigned to the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit was captured holding an infant in Afghanistan while smiling down at him.

This picture was shared widely on social media and liked over 25,000 times.

Fearful of a Taliban-run country, thousands of Afghans are still waiting for their evacuation before the US leaves at the end the month.

Particularly, the airport is a scene of despair as Afghans struggle to pass through the crowds and Taliban checkpoints.

This week, President Joe Biden stated that 13,000 Afghans have been evacuated by the United States since August 14. Nearly 6,000 US troops currently facilitate evacuations.

According to Al Jazeera, Biden stated that "this is one of the most difficult and largest airlifts in the history" in a Friday televised speech from the White House. "I can't promise what the end result will be."
