Rafael Nadal announced on Friday that he would end his 2021 tennis season earlier than expected due to a left foot problem that has been bothering him for over a year. This will prevent him from participating in the US Open this month.
The No. The world's No. 4 player was forced to withdraw from the Masters 1000 in Toronto last week because of an early exit in Washington.
Nadal tweeted Friday, "I just wanted to let you know that unfortunately, I must end the 2021 season."
At the French Open, the recurring issue flared up. Novak Djokovic was the eventual champion.
Nadal stated that "Honestly, my foot has been hurting more than it should for the past year" and suggested that he needed to spend some time to either find a solution or improve his condition in order to have options over the next few years.
"I am full of enthusiasm and determination to get in the best shape possible to continue competing for the things that truly motivate me.
"I am convinced that this is possible with the recovery and a daily effort. It is possible if I work hard enough.
Roger Federer, Nadal's rival and 20-time Grand Slam winner, is also out of US Open. He will miss several months due to knee surgery.
The US Open is from August 30-Sept. 12.
