Cam Newton, Mac Jones both have strong showings in New England Patriots' preseason win over Philadelphia Eagles

Cam Newton appeared to have strengthened his hold on the New England Patriots' starting spot as quarterback in the 35-0 win over host Philadelphia Eagles. This was the culmination of what Bill Belichick called a "good week".
Newton was 8-of-9 for 101 yards. He also had one touchdown and no interceptions. Newton played three series before Mac Jones took over.

Jones, the University of Alabama's first round pick, was also productive, going 13-of-19 for an impressive 146 yards in four series. There were no touchdowns or interceptions.

Jakobi Meyers, a receiver, said that Newton's 28-yard scoring pass to him was a win for all three of them. "Last year, [Cam] was the one who got the short end of it. He had to be put in a situation without any preseason. While I don't want to make excuses for him, I believe this year is a big leap forward and we are all improving as an offense.

Belichick repeatedly stated that Newton is the starter. However, he added that Jones could be ready to challenge or compete whenever it occurs.

Jones is competitive and challenging. His first drive in the second quarter on Thursday night was 17 plays, 91 yard and took up 9:04 before Rhamondre Stephenson ran a 1-yard touchdown. He was in a difficult spot to get into the game in the second quarter.

Meyers said Meyers, who had three catches for 56 yards. Meyers said that this was their expectation when he was drafted.

While the Patriots did not play all of their defensive starters, the Eagles were able to have most of their first-stringers through the first quarter. They also had some familiarity with their opponent due to their practice against them two days earlier.

Belichick was asked about Newton's second season with the Patriots. He also said that he still has a lot to learn about Newton. He did admit that he believes they are making progress.

Newton handed out two footballs to the fans after touchdowns. He also said that he hopes that there will be many more deliveries throughout the season.

The Patriots will be practicing with the New York Giants next week in Foxborough (Massachusetts), before heading to East Rutherford (New Jersey) to face them in their preseason finale on Aug. 29.
