Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, announced that the automaker would expand into humanoid robotics at the AI event held on Thursday.

Musk revealed the "Tesla Bot", a 5-ft. 8-inch, 125-pound robotics device, at the event. Musk stated that the bot will have information on a screen located at its face. The CEO stated that the robot can also lift 150 pounds and carry around 45 pounds. The bot can only travel 5 miles an hour.

Musk jokingly said, "We're setting them so that it is at an mechanical level, at the physical level that you can run from it, and most likely overpower its."

According to Musk, the bot will be powered by Tesla's Autopilot software. The bot will have eight cameras that can feed into the neural network Tesla created for FSD software.

The neural network mimics the functions of the brain by allowing the vehicle to scan its surroundings using cameras. It also allows it to identify and label different routes and images to determine what to do when it comes across obstacles.

Musk stated that cars are semi-sentient robots with wheels. It makes sense to add that [the software] to a human-like form as well.

Musk stated that businesses would prefer to use the robot for repetitive, dangerous tasks. Musk said that the robot's ability to navigate the world would be the true test.

Musk said that there will be many applications for the economy. Musk stated that physical work will no longer be an option in the future.

Although the CEO provided a visual representation for what he wanted the robot to look, Tesla has yet to create a functional bot. He stated that the company will have a prototype ready by next year.

Musk stated that the robot will fit seamlessly into Tesla’s mission and be constructed with many of the same materials as its cars.

"We are making the pieces necessary for [building] humanoid robots, so we should probably make them. Musk stated that if we don't make it, someone else will. We want to ensure it's safe."

Musk, the Tesla founder, did not set a deadline for the release of the prototype. However Musk is well-known for his big promises regarding future builds. Musk stated that Tesla would have "one-million robotaxis on road" by 2020 at Tesla's last Autonomous Day. The company has not yet released a fully autonomous vehicle, because its FSD software requires that a licensed operator monitor it.
