Lucy Bronze is Fifa's reigning Best Women's Player

After her participation in Team GB's Olympic Football campaign, Lucy Bronze, a Manchester City and England defender, had to have knee surgery.

Fifa's Best Women's Player, aged 29, made 28 appearances last season for City. This helped them finish runners up in the Women’s Super League.

Bronze was in Tokyo for four matches against Team GB, as they reached the final eight.

"This week, I had a very successful plan knee surgery. The surgery went smoothly and we now need to focus on a quick recovery.

Berwick-on-Tweed-born Bronze, who joined City from French side Olympique Lyonnais in September 2020, will likely miss the start of the WSL season on the weekend of 3-5 September.

City's entry in round two, the revamped Champions League on 31 August, could also be too soon for the full back.
