Court Blocks a Vast Alaskan Drilling Project, Citing Climate Dangers

WASHINGTON On Wednesday, a federal judge in Alaska blocked construction permits for an extensive oil drilling project on Alaska's North Slope. The project was to produce more that 100,000 barrels per day over the next 30 year.
ConocoPhillips, the oil giant, approved the multibillion-dollar plan known as Willow. It was legally supported by the Biden Administration. Environmental groups sued, claiming that the federal government failed to consider the impacts of drilling on wildlife and the impact that oil burning would have upon global warming.

A federal judge agreed.

Judge Sharon L. Gleason of United States District Court for Alaska stated that the Trump administration allowed the project. The Interior Departments Bureau of Land Managements exclusion of emissions from the analysis of the environmental impacts of the project was arbitrary.
