Sam Bankman-Fried, a cryptocurrency billionaire, has donated nearly half a million dollars to a non-profit that supports bitcoin developers. This is in keeping with his philosophy of "earningto-give," which he adopted at the age of 29.
The founder of FTX, a cryptocurrency derivatives trading platform, has made a $150,000 per-year three-year commitment for Brink Technology to support the Bitcoin community. The value will support bitcoin developers who are enrolled in their fellowship programs.
This is Brink's first commitment over a multi-year period from a cryptocurrency exchange.
Brink was founded by Bitcoin core contributors and education experts to build a pipeline to new engineering talent to help preserve the asset’s open-source software and strengthen its protocol and network.
Hong Kong-based Bankman Fried said that he believes in education programs such as Brink's, which will help expand the space.
John Newbery, co-founder of Brink, stated in a statement that FTX was the first donor to provide multiple years' funding. This gives him the financial stability to invest in long-term projects in the open-source community.
Bankman-Fried is a famously low-profile individual who has made it clear that he plans to donate most of the money he makes to causes that he believes in.
One of those was Joe Biden's presidential campaign. Bankman-Fried was one of Biden's largest donors. He contributed as much as other big-time CEOs like Eric Schmidt at Google and Reed Hastings at Netflix.
