Newcastle 2-4 West Ham : Hammers showed a lot character to beat Newcastle – David Moyes

West Ham United came back twice to win their Premier League campaign. They beat Newcastle United in an entertaining match at St. James' Park.

Half time saw the Hammers trailing 2-1, but they rallied after the break to win with goals from Michail Antonio, Tomas Soucek, and Said Benrahma.

Callum Wilson scored Newcastle's first goal after five minutes. He then took Allan Saint-Maximin’s cross home to delight the stadium's 50,000 fans.

West Ham scored equal midway through the second period after VAR reviewed and ruled that Aaron Cresswell had crossed-shot all the way into goal unaffected despite Jarrod Bowen being flagged offside.

Newcastle took the lead again just before the break, when Jacob Murphy tapped in Matt Ritchie's cross. However, West Ham equalised soon after the restart, as Benrahma headed in.

After Pablo Fornals was found to have been fouled inside the box by Murphy, Antonio had his penalty blocked by debutant keeper Freddie Woodman. But Soucek reacted quickly to the rebound and put the Hammers ahead for their first time.

Antonio sealed the victory by driving in a thunderous shot to score his 47th Premier League goal, which equals Paolo di Canio’s record for the club in this competition.

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce claims that the 'harsh penalty' was a 'big moment in his side’s loss

Newcastle's Hammers fight, but show no defensive concern

Although West Ham was unable to finish in the top four by two points last year, this performance and result were a great way to prove that they can fight for Champions League qualification this season.

Although the defense for the two goals they conceded was poor, David Moyes' team showed great spirit to defeat a hostile home crowd and win convincingly.

They won the second half. Their attack speed and numbers were so impressive that they dominated Newcastle's opposition.

The performance of Newcastle boss Steve Bruce will have both positives and negatives.

Newcastle fans applauded their team's attacking intent at half-time after they were criticised for being too pragmatic last season, when his Newcastle side was in danger of relegation.

Their weaknesses remain. West Ham scored three goals due to poor defending. Murphy was penalised for this decision. Bruce will be looking to improve that area to avoid another relegation battle.
