Celtic 3-1 Hearts: Hosts through to Scottish League Cup quarter-finals

Celtic took a well-deserved lead thanks to Odsonne Edouard’s goal.

Celtic retaliated against Hearts and won a Scottish League Cup tie against Raith Rovers.

Ange Postecoglou and his men lost at Tynecastle in the league opener. However, they won with a narrow win that ended the visitors' 100% start.

After Stephen Welsh and Odsonne Edouard had Celtic cruising, Hearts were saved by Liam Boyce's penalty.

Kyogo Furuhashi quickly restored the advantage of two goals, and Aaron McEneff replied deep into additional time.

Next month, Celtic will host second-tier Raith (who knocked out Aberdeen) as they attempt to regain their trophy that they won four times in a row up until last season.

After a close contest, Hearts were crushed by the narrow margin of defeat. Since Tynecastle defeat, Celtic have been in their stride and now have four consecutive wins with 16 goals.

An impressive home performance was ruined by the loss of soft goals. Edouard, who had been re-starting for four matches, could have scored a first-half goal-trick.

As they beat Hearts in, Celtic's work-rate and intensity were matched by their high quality. At the interval, stats were clear: Celtic had 83% possession and 21 shot while Hearts had none.

Surprisingly, Robbie Neilson's side held on until the end of the first half-hour before conceding.

Furuhashi was unable to make a drive at the post, but Craig Gordon tipped it away. Edouard missed the target by a hair and Tom Rogic followed suit after Peter Haring and Craig Halkett were left struggling with their footwork.

Welsh reached for the corner of David Turnbull and climbed over, Furuhashi was denied a shot by Stephen Kingsley. Hearts couldn't stop the flow.

It was worth it. Furuhashi's brilliant pass with his boot outside found James Forrest galloping down to the right. Edouard was able to finish his low cross with a first-time goal.

Frenchman Gordon missed his close-range goal, and Gordon should have made it two. However, Welsh was able to tee up Welsh for the second. Hearts were found lying in a corner while Edouard crossed and Welsh thundered a header to the bottom corner.

The home team did not let up, with Gordon twice attempting to stop Edouard after the restart, and Welsh moving over.

Celtic should have been out of reach, but half-time substitute Josh Ginnelly gave Hearts a firm foothold. Carl Starfelt didn't take the winger's cross seriously and clattered Boyce, while the Northern Irishman sent Joe Hart the wrong direction.

Celtic's intensity dropped suddenly and passes started to go astray. After being released by Rogic in the left-hand channel, Furuhashi quickly restored calm and beat Gordon at the near post.

Callum McGregor, substitute Adam Montgomery, and Furuhashi all close to adding a fourth Celtic player, James McCarthy making his debut off the bench. But McEneff scored a Kingsley cutback in final seconds.
