Herbert Hainer, Bayern president, stated that today was a "sad and dark day" for FC Bayern and all its fans.

"Gerd Müller was the greatest striker ever - and a fine individual, a personality of world football. We share deep sorrow with Uschi, his wife, and his entire family.

Gerd Müller would have prevented FC Bayern from being the club that we love today. His name and his memory will be remembered forever.

"One of the greatest legends of history"

Muller was twice named German footballer-of-the-year. He won the Golden Boot for scoring 10 goals at 1970 World Cup. Also, he won the Ballon d'Or in that year.

Two years later, he helped West Germany win European Championship. He scored twice in a 3-0 victory against the Soviet Union.

Oliver Kahn, chief executive of Bayern, stated that Gerd Muller's passing deeply upsets all.

"He is one of the greatest legends of FC Bayern's history, his achievements are unrivalled today and will always be part of the great history FC Bayern and all German football.

Gerd Muller, as a player and person, stands for FC Bayern's development to become one of the most important clubs in the world. Gerd will always be in our hearts."

In his 15 years with Bayern, Muller was seven times the Bundesliga's highest scorer. From 1972, when he scored 85 goals, to 2012 when Lionel Messi overtook his total, Muller held the record for most goals in one calendar year.

His record of 40 goals per Bundesliga season, set in 1971-72, stood for 49 years until it was broken in May by Robert Lewandowski.

Muller was able to help Bayern win four Bundesliga Cup and DFB Cup titles as well as three European Cups, one European Cup Winners Cup, and an Intercontinental Cup.

The club announced that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2015.
