The Customs and Border Protection agency reported that border agents in Memphis, Tennessee have so far seized thousands of fake COVID-19 vaccination certificates.
In a statement, the agency stated that agents had recently flagged a suspicious shipment from Shenzhen (China) that was marked in the manifest with "PAPER CARD PAPER." It contained 51 fake vaccination cards of low quality - it was the 15th such shipment that agents discovered that night.
CBP stated that the port had been intercepting counterfeit vaccine cards every night. This led to 121 seizures totaling 3,000 vaccine cards.
The agency stated that border agents immediately recognized the fake cards as they were loaded with typos, unfinished sentences, incorrect or misspelled Spanish words and were filled with unfinished words.
CBP stated that fake cards shipped to the United States are always from China and the recipients are "unfortunately all across the United States."
In the past, the FBI warned that buying or creating fake vaccine cards was a federal crime. This is because it's illegal to use an official seal of a government agency (such as HHS) or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In recent months, multiple arrests have been made across the country on charges related to fake vaccination cards.
CBP's Memphis area port director urged agents not to order fake vaccine cards in a Friday statement.
