Since 2017, the project has been in cinematic limbo. Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner were selected to star after McFarlane's original script was read. It is unclear whether both actors are still involved. However, once they have seen the script revisions, it is possible that they will jump aboard again.

McFarlane was one of the creators of Image Comics. The Spawn comic's first issue was published in 1992. Spawn is about Albert Francis Simmons, a black-ops agents who is betrayed by Bruce Stinson and is killed. His soul is sent to Hell because of his past murderous activities. He makes a deal to get back to the Earthly plane by negotiating with Malebolgia, but that comes at a price. His family has moved on, as he returns to Earth with superpowers, but he is severely disfigured.

Spawn was not the first adaptation. New Line Cinema produced a live-action movie starring Michael Jai White, the anti-hero. The animated series Todd McFarlanes Spawn, which aired on HBO for three seasons, was also premiered by New Line Cinema in 1997.

McFarlane is eager to expand Spawn's universe. He is just weeks away from publishing the King Spawn comic. This expansion will get the cinematic treatment. Let's get the first movie out of the way first!
