Everton 3-1 Southampton: Rafael Benitez makes winning start

Richarlison drew attention to Andros Townsend’s header

Rafael Benitez started off in a great position as Everton manager. His team came from behind to defeat Southampton in front an excited Goodison Park.

Goodison, former Liverpool manager, received a warm welcome from fans before kick-off. This was a positive start.

The atmosphere quickly changed when Saints debutant Adam Armstrong was gifted an opener by Michael Keane. He had joined the team from Blackburn earlier in the week. Armstrong grabbed Che Adams' ball and rolled it into the top corner.

Everton struggled the remainder of the first period, but Benitez's decision not to place Richarlison in front immediately after the break paid off as Richarlison poked home from Andros Townsend’s header.

Benitez's team, which was without James Rodriguez, sent their fans into delirium with two goals in five minutes.

Abdoulaye Doucoure first turned in the penalty box, before smashing into top corner.

Benitez's tactical change proved to be a masterstroke. Richarlison, who was just returned from the Olympic gold medal with Brazil at Tokyo 2020 in Tokyo, scored Dominic Calvert-Lewin with a diving header at near post.

Demarai Gray made a great debut, running unassisted and providing plenty of ammunition to the Everton strikers.

Richarlison demonstrates the difference

Benitez was the first manager to cross the Liverpool line since 1890s. Six weeks ago, there were many protests from fans against Benitez's appointment.

This was his first Premier League match for more than two decades. This was Everton's third win in 13 home games. That includes last season when Carlo Ancelotti failed to deliver a European challenge.

The team often struggled to overcome deficits under the Italian manager. But buoyed by Benitez's switch and a lively atmosphere, they continued pressing for more goals after they had reached equalisation.

Southampton also contributed to this open game. Armstrong showed a lot of effort and linked well with Adams.

Tino Livramento made a great debut at right-back. The back-line held Calvert-Lewin under control until Richarlison joined the attack.

After struggling in the first half, the Brazilian was placed on the left side of Calvert-Lewin's three-behind. He was then booked for an insane dive at the end of the hour.

Everton was looking nothing like the team that would take control in the second period. Keane's error led to a series of errors that could have cost Ralph Hasenhuttl another goal.

After Richarlison's equaliser however, hosts were inspired and press for more goals. Although the Brazilian team played brilliantly, Keane's attempt to score was stopped by James Ward-Prowse.

Everton fans weren't disappointed and will continue to hope that Benitez's reign continues with similar results after both a performance as well as a result that was worth waiting for.
