Chelsea 3-0 Crystal Palace: Premier League title contenders cruise against Patrick Vieira's side

Last update on.
Trevoh Chalobah's sixth goal was his sixth in his career, after scoring during loan spells at Ipswich and Huddersfield.

Chelsea proved their Premier League title credentials by beating Patrick Vieira's Crystal Palace with a comfortable win.

Trevoh Chalobah, an academy product, scored their third goal from 25 yards in front of a packed Stamford Bridge.

Thomas Tuchel, Blues boss, stated that he was surprised by his team - European champions who won the Uefa Super Cup Wednesday - and that they were among the favorites to win the title.

They were great in the league opener, Vieira's first game in England as a manager. However, it was a disappointing performance.

Marcos Alonso scored Chelsea's opening goal with a free kick from 22 yards.

After Vicente Guaita had spilled Mason Mount’s cross, Christian Pulisic blasted in another via the underside bar.

Chalobah, who was part of Chelsea's youth setup 14 years ago, drove from faraway to win the victory.

Palace's performance improved slightly after the break but Jordan Ayew was their only attempt on target.

No Lukaku, Kante, Ziyech, Chilwell, Havertz, no problem

Many people are expecting Chelsea to win this title because of their impressive squad depth.

Seven out of twenty BBC pundits picked the Blues. The other thirteen went for champions Manchester City.

Romelu Lukaku, the striker, was unable to play due to his quarantine following his Inter Milan move of 97.5 million. On Wednesday, Villarreal's influential midfielder N'Golo Kante was injured and Hakim Ziyech, a winger, was also hurt.

England's left-back Ben Chilwell was replaced by experienced centre-back Thiago Silva and Kai Havertz. They both scored the winner of the Champions League final.

Joe Cole, an ex-Blues midfielder, stated during the week that Tuchel's every decision seems to pay off.

It felt like that when Alonso, who was starting in place of Chilwell as left wing-back, scored a perfectly executed free-kick to give them the lead. Palace presented so little threat, that Alonso basically played as an orthodox player on the wing.

Pulisic continued his excellent form against Palace by finishing in close range after Guaita had crossed. Five of 13 American Premier League goals were scored against the Eagles.

There were many chances for them to score more, with Timo Werner's first touch on a few occasions letting him down and Alonso forcing Guaita to make a good save.

The best moment was when Chalobah, a 22-year old Chelsea player who made his debut in Belfast three day ago, took the ball in space and hit the inside of the post.

There was a lot of cheering when Champions League star Havertz arrived - it was the first time that he or this Blues team have ever played at full Stamford Bridge.

Vieira should forget all this and continue to move forward

This was Vieira's first game as Palace manager. He previously managed New York City in America and Nice in France's Ligue 1 league.

He had warned that "to put together my ideas may take longer", but he was right. This was the hardest game he could have hoped for.

The club lost nine first-teamers over the summer, most of them at the end their contracts, following the departure of Roy Hodgson as manager. Marc Guehi (18m) was the only summer signing, and he was sold to another club.

Joachim Andersen was promoted with Fulham last year and came on during the second half.

Palace hopes to be more youthful after the departures of the older players. 18-year-old Jesurun Raksakyi, a winger, made his debut on the bench.

Vieira's team, which started with a four man defence but also tried a back five, failed to score a single goal or touch in Chelsea’s box during the first half. Although Edouard Mendy was tested, they had to wait for Ayew to score. Ayew's header went straight at the Blues goalkeeper.

Jeffrey Schlupp scored and Christian Benteke missed a goal, but the Eagles never looked like scoring at any point in the game.

The real test of Vieira and Palace's looks will be against promoted Brentford on Saturday.
