Boy, 13, dies after lightning strike at New York City beach

Police said that a lightning strike occurred at a New York City Beach on Thursday and killed a 13-year old boy. Six other people were also injured.The boy was identified as Carlos Ramos by the New York City Police Department on Friday. He was then declared dead at Jacobi Medical Center.Police responded to a call at Orchard Beach, Bronx, on Thursday evening after 5 p.m. and found seven victims of lightning strikes. Jacobi was notified and all seven people were taken to Jacobi.Police said that the other victims were a 41-year old man, a 33 year-old woman and a 13-yearold girl. They were all expected to live."Our hearts go to the victims of the tragic incident," Meghan Llor, a spokesperson from the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation said in a Thursday statement.According to the department, lifeguards at Orchard Beach directed people to get out of the water and made announcements about clearing the beach in the event of a lightning strike.According to NBC New York, the storm hit so quickly that lightning struck before anyone could get off of the beach.On a hot day in New York City, the strike took place. The region was under heat warnings Thursday morning, with high heat indexes of more than 100 degrees predicted.According to the National Weather Service, it was 92 degrees in Central Park, Manhattan just before 5 p.m. High heat will continue through Friday.
